Merpcraft revival (or attempt)

With the original Merpcraft server being offline a lot, I've been spending some time on other servers. I was able to get the Minecraft fix I needed but the community just wasn't the same. The people on these servers were kind of like us, they had a personal history with one another, and I felt more like an outsider than anything. That's when I came up with an idea: the create my own server just for trusted Merp players.

...And then the original server came back on the other day, but I said fuck it and set up my server anyway. So I started a fresh, small survival server and whitelisted people I trust. Unfortunately I still don't have a public IP so right now I'm using Hamachi. If anyone's interested in joining, just download the free version of Hamachi, go to Join an existing network, and use the following info:

Network ID: Merp86
Password: merp

When you join it you'll see a user call s86server. Copy the IP address shown for it, open Minecraft and connect to that IP to get on. Since I'm using the free version of Hamachi only 5 people can be on at a time (if this becomes an issue I'll buy it to increase the amount), however since it's on my local network darkphotog88 and I can access it without using Hamachi.

So get on, do some survival stuff, etc. There won't be factions or any extras, just /home and a plugin that makes chopping trees easier. Currently FSCarver and I are the only opped players.

I'll be running the server as much as I can, but don't be surprised if it goes offline as it's not really built for it...

So Hamachi decided to not cooperate randomly today. I couldn't get the server to be reachable, so I'll be hosting it on my main computer for now. Just use Hamachi like before but use the IP for sirrus86 to connect this time. If Merp86 is full I've created Merp87 and Merp88, both passwords are "merp".

Before my personal computer burst into flames, I've managed to put XP back on my old computer and move the server back to it, so the server IP has changed, hopefully for the last time.

I've moved, the server's back. IP right now: 74.78.148.65 (this may be changed by my ISP at some point)

Oh and no more Hamachi!

Any chance of getting World Edit on your creative world?

Also I know that a lot of people lost their inventories and ender chest inventories. If you need help retrieving the items you lost, please contact me or Carver (or post here) with approximately what you've lost, we'll do our best to get them back for you.

Going forward I now have automatic backup software running on the server, so if this happens again I should be able to more easily retrieve everything.

What's been going on with the server Currently? Or does anyone even use this site anymore?

I'm taking a guess that the forum is probably dead, considering the lack of activity, or people just completely forgot about the forums.

For the server, i'm taking a good guess that with bukkit or whichever being gone, people probably won't play online vanilla, unless they're whitelisted or something.

But this is just my guess on what is going on at the moment.

So I'm alive again, but it's whitelisted.

It's great seeing so many familiar faces coming back, but unfortunately as some of you may have experienced the server hasn't been handling things very well lately.

I've tried everything I can think of to improve Minecraft on the server, but unfortunately it's becoming apparent that my old computer can't quite handle the demand anymore. I'd need to increase the server's RAM, and unfortunately the motherboard isn't made to accept more than 4GB, so that'd need to be replaced too, which means probably a new processor as well... You see where this is going.

So I've finally decided it is time to get a better machine. I've already created a list of parts (click the link below) to make a new server. Keep in mind this will initially be solely dedicated as a Minecraft server, though I may eventually use it for personal use as well.

The New Server

Any suggestions are welcome. I plan to run this on MineOS so that most resources can be dedicated. I already have a power supply that should be sufficient.

I can ultimately afford everything listed here, however with the holidays around the corner, our wedding in May, and all my other regular bills, debts, etc it'll be awhile before this can come together. With that in mind, I'd first like to offer anybody the opportunity to donate towards the new server. Any amount is helpful, however I know everyone has their own expenses so there is no obligation. Again, I can (and will if needed) eventually pay for this myself, this would just speed up the process.

I also intend to eventually upgrade my internet to one with higher upload speeds, meaning less lag.
